Lille: Why It’s Worth Visiting

Lille is the capital of the Hauts-de-France region, just a quick hop from Paris or Brussels by train. It’s famous for its rich history, stunning architecture, vibrant cultural scene, and yes the food. From the cobblestone streets of Vieux Lille (Old Lille) to its trendy boutiques and museums, Lille has something for everyone. Plus, the locals are so welcoming, you’ll feel right at home.

1. Start at the Grand Place

Kick off your day in Lille’s heart: the Grand Place. Surrounded by elegant 17th-century buildings, it’s the perfect spot to soak up the city’s vibe. Grab a coffee at Meert, a historic patisserie dating back to 1761, and don’t leave without trying their famous waffles filled with vanilla cream.

2. Wander Through Vieux Lille

From the Grand Place, stroll into the picturesque Old Town. Vieux Lille is all about cobblestone streets, colourful Flemish-style houses, and chic boutiques. Don’t miss:

  • Notre-Dame de la Treille Cathedral: A Gothic beauty with a modern twist.

  • La Vieille Bourse: Lille’s old stock exchange, where you’ll find second-hand books and vintage treasures in the courtyard.

  • Local shops: Check out Atelier Cambier for artisanal chocolates and Les Compagnons des Saisons for quirky gifts.

3. Lunch Like a Local

Time for some authentic Northern French cuisine! Head to Estaminet T'Rijsel, a cozy Flemish-style tavern. Order the Carbonade Flamande (beef stew cooked in beer) or a Welsh Rarebit, a gooey, cheesy dish that’ll keep you fuelled for the rest of the day.

Afternoon Adventures

4. Visit the Palais des Beaux-Arts

Art lovers, this one’s for you! The Palais des Beaux-Arts is one of France’s largest museums, second only to the Louvre. It houses masterpieces by Rubens, Van Dyck, Monet, and more. Even if you’re short on time, it’s worth a visit just to admire the building itself.

5. Explore the Citadel and Its Surroundings

Built by Vauban in the 17th century, the Citadel of Lille is a military fortress surrounded by lush parkland. Take a leisurely walk or rent a bike to explore the scenic paths around Parc de la Citadelle. It’s a peaceful escape from the city hustle.

6. Dinner at Le Compostelle

For dinner, treat yourself at Le Compostelle, an elegant restaurant in Vieux Lille. Their seasonal menu features refined French dishes with a modern twist. If you’re a foodie, you’ll be in heaven here.

TOP TIP: Once in Lille, don’t miss the chance to indulge in its culinary delights. My favorite spot? Le Broc, a cheese-based restaurant where every dish celebrates the rich, creamy flavors that Lille is famous for.
