TUI Flight Struggles to Land Amid Fuel Emergency: What You Need to Know

By Flight Expert Mr Plane Guy

Travelling with TUI long-haul can be a cost effective flight dream – a TUI Dreamliner flights, great inflight food options on the TUI menu long-haul, and a smooth journey across continents. However, even the best-planned flights can hit unexpected snags. Case in point: a TUI flight from Cancun, Mexico, to Manchester, UK, faced a terrifying situation!

The Mayday Scare – A Narrow Escape

On December 20, 2023, TUI flight TOM173, carrying over 300 passengers, took off from Cancun for its overnight flight to Manchester. The crew was prepared for strong winds over the UK, but they didn’t expect them to persist as long as they did. After failing to land at Manchester Airport due to high wind speeds, the plane had to circle above the airport, burning more fuel. When it was clear the aircraft couldn’t land as planned, the decision was made to divert to Birmingham Airport.

Unfortunately, the aircraft was dangerously low on fuel, only about an hour’s worth left. With high winds still in play, the pilot declared a Mayday emergency just minutes before they managed to land safely in Birmingham, though the plane was still 35% below the recommended fuel reserve.

TUI Long-Haul Travel

Beyond the excitement of flying aboard the TUI Dreamliner with its comfy cabins and in-flight entertainment, there’s a lot to consider when you’re miles from home. From the TUI baggage allowance to the TUI flight menu, here's a quick rundown of what you need to know before your flight:

  • TUI Long-Haul Flights: Whether you’re flying to sunny Mexico or the Caribbean, TUI’s long-haul flights are equipped with extra comfort, quieter cabins, and in-flight services. On these flights, you're allowed up to 25kg of checked luggage as part of a TUI package holiday (perfect for all those souvenirs!). Be sure to check your TUI baggage allowance before departure, especially if you’re planning to pack in some extra goodies!

  • TUI Baggage Allowance: It’s always important to stay on top of your TUI baggage allowance to avoid unnecessary fees. For most long-haul trips, you're allowed 25kg for checked luggage. Don’t forget that hand luggage is also part of your trip, with TUI's hand luggage policy allowing one main item up to 55 x 40 x 20 cm and a small personal item like a laptop bag or handbag.

  • TUI Flight Menu: If you're a foodie like me, you’ll be delighted by TUI's long-haul food menu. Depending on your class and duration, you can enjoy a variety of meals, from vegetarian options to hearty meat dishes. I’ve personally loved the delicious options on TUI's menu long-haul, especially their local-themed meals inspired by the destination. You’ll be well-fed as you fly to your tropical getaway!

What Happens if You Experience Delays or Cancellations?

Flights can be delayed for all sorts of reasons, as we saw with the TUI flight's struggle to land in Birmingham. Although these situations are rare, it’s a good idea to prepare yourself for potential disruptions. TUI Airways has faced its share of delays, with average delays of around 40 minutes. So, what should you do if you face a TUI flight delay or cancellation? Here are some tips:

  • Stay informed: Make sure to monitor your flight status using the TUI app, social media, or flight tracking tools.

  • Know your rights: If your flight is delayed by more than three hours, you could be entitled to compensation. TUI’s delays aren’t uncommon, and you may be able to claim up to £520 for significant disruptions.

  • Pack essentials: Prepare for any unexpected delays by bringing snacks, entertainment, and important medications.

  • Claim compensation: If your TUI flight is delayed or cancelled, check your eligibility for compensation under EU regulations.
